The Independence attribute helps teams identify whether a provider or site of care operates independently or is affiliated with a larger health system or corporate parent.
Methodology
Provider independence is determined using:
- NPPES sole proprietor designation, or
- Whether the provider practices exclusively at independent sites
Site independence is determined using:
- Third-party data identifying whether a site has an affiliated corporate parent, IDN, or health system
Provider and site independence are tracked separately. A provider may be independent while still maintaining hospital employment or admitting privileges.
